Matthew 16 (ESV)

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them,[a] “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[b] I will build my church, and the gates of hell[c] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[d] in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![e] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance[f] to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life[g]will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Christ dies for me! Hallelujah! Thank u Jesus! I take up my cross daily and follow him!

V. 5-12, seems like a typical ministry encounter. Even Jesus had to deal with these goofball fishermen and tax collectors! It's almost, a comedic encounter: Jesus giving warning against the hypocrites and the disciples thinking of food...

That aside, it is a good reminder to me, that teaching others isn't going to be seamless. There's going to be some "do you not yet perceive?" moments.. If there were for Jesus, there certainly will be for me.

Yes Sarah, I noticed in verse 23 the exclamation mark. Powerful and with authority Jesus is with his words...

I like verse 27. Jesus is speaking on behalf of himself..."For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,"

Praying that we as a church that knows the truth would beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Saducees. That we would love the truth and the Person of Jesus Christ more than a system of rules and doctrine which we may subscribe to.

Vs. 23 is a scary rebuke! It is so easy to slip into the trap of setting our minds on man's interests; yet, as seen in this passage it is a very serious issue in God's eyes. I pray that I will run my race with my gaze fixed on the prize set before me instead of getting distracted with the entanglements that take away from my usefulness to God.

Theme Summary: Jesus critics could not rightly interpret the signs of Jesus coming Kingdom, and were promised only the sign of Jonah*. While Jesus warns the disciples to beware of the infectious false teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the right teaching that would be the foundation of the triumphant church. Jesus teaches/promises the other aspect of the sign of Jonah, that he would be killed and on the third day raised, and that anyone who would come after him must also lose his life to find it. Everyone will be repaid for what they have done when he comes in glory and some of them would not die before they see him come into his kingdom, with the encouragement that their sufferings will bring the advancement of the kingdom.

*Sign of Jonah: The Sign of the death, burial, and resurrection was part of it that sign. The
other part was the warning that in 40 days Nineveh would be overthrown (Jonah 3:4). Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah, but the Pharisees and Sadducees would lead the people to reject one greater than Jonah (see previous chapter, this is explicit). The biblical convention of poetically calling a year a day would match up with actual events (in 40 years Jerusalem would be overthrown.)

Jesus is building His church! That means He still has more people that He is going to save! That means that being committed to proclaiming the gospel will ultimately be fruitful. Praying for opportunities this week to tell others the Good News of Jesus Christ.

How many times do we, like Peter, try to stick up for Christ, but we do it with our sights on the the things of man (politics, patriotism, public policy, moralism, etc.) at the expense of the things of God? I pray that we (me included) will get behind Christ and allow him to shine through our lives in ways that have eternal significance for the Kingdom.

The Pharisees and the Sadducees saw the truth and even knew the truth, but they didn’t love the truth so as to be saved like Nineveh was when they all repented, loving the truth from Jonah.
The gates of Hades cannot overpower the church of Christ. Death only locks in His people for eternity, ushering in His kingdom instead of killing and destroying it.
I still find it interesting that Christ said we must take up our cross and follow Him before it was ever revealed how He would die.
